Nickelback kicked off their 2009 North American tour in support of its latest release, Dark Horse, with a rocking show at Nashville’s Sommet Center Wednesday night, and Gibson photographer Sandy Campbell was there to catch the Canadian rockers, and all their beautiful Gibson guitars.

The band has been in Nashville for the last two weeks utilizing the Sommet Center’s state-of-the-art rehearsal/soundstage to work out the kinks of its high-tech stage and lighting show. For the Wednesday night opening show, the band simply moved its equipment about 150 feet to the main stage, then proceeded to nearly blow the roof off the arena, which is also the home of the NHL’s Nashville Predators.

Backed by up-and-comers Saving Abel and fellow hard rockers Seether, Nickelback finally took the stage around 9:30 pm and didn’t disappoint the nearly sold-out crowd, which also included hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, whose Phoenix Coyotes were in town for a game against the Predators.

The band played all its hits, including the sing-a-long favorite “Photograph,” and finished the nearly two-hour set with a pair of songs from 2003’s Long Road, “Someday” and “Figured You Out.”

The band continues its North American trek tonight in Lexington, Ky., followed by a Saturday night show in Detroit. Nickelback wraps up the North American portion of its 2009 tour in April, then heads across the pond for a handful of dates in the United Kingdom in May.
