Marathoners kiss past the hurt
Richmond couple claims radio station prize with 10-hour lip lock

So it went Friday at Super Pawn in Round Lake Beach, where 19 couples kicked off Valentine's Day weekend by participating in the fifth annual Longest Lip Lock contest, hosted by 95 WIIL Rock (95.1 FM).

Starting at 6 a.m. live on the "Tom and Lisa Morning Show," the couples began smooching in a bout to the end, without even bathroom breaks allowed. One by one the couples fell, succumbing to fatigue, pain or a bribe for prizes. By 4 p.m., only four couples were still standing.Jennifer Berg and Jonathan Giamalakis of Lake Villa lasted until 1:38 p.m.

"It was very painful," Berg said. "The kissing's not bad, but your neck starts hurting, and your knees."

The couple didn't leave empty-handed. They received tickets for the Buck Cherry concert at Allstate Arena, and will get to meet the band.

But the grand prize -- a $3,000 prize package including a diamond ring, Nickelback concert tickets, a luxury dinner and movie tickets -- enticed many to stay in the contest longer, a few even admitting to wearing adult diapers as a last resort to avoid quitting.

Brittany Wiegman of Antioch and Marty Deisenroth of Lake Villa, College of Lake County students who met while working at Scott Dogs in Lake Villa, said they were determined to fight through the discomfort.

"It's miserable," Wiegman said in mid-kiss. "It's the feet and knees, and now our teeth are hurting somehow. But I love Nickelback."Finally, at 5 p.m., the last locked lips belonged to Bailey Etten and Jason Zielinski of Richmond, who had a couple of tricks up their sleeve: they came as event veterans, having survived four-plus hours in 2008; and they knew how to keep their mouths fresh.

"We kept the same piece of gum in our mouths the whole time," said Etten, adding that this was a good thing, since "every muscle in your whole body is just aching" after standing with your lips together for 10 hours.

But as the couples left one by one, even after hours of kissing, most were smiling, holding hands, and seemingly quite happy to be together.
