Record deal a shot at stardom for Norwood band - 06.08.09

It was seconds into their acoustic set when record mogul Antonio “L.A.” Reid began humming their chorus.
Three songs later the three-time Grammy Award-winning American record executive said: “Yep, this is awesome. What do you guys need?”
Norwood’s Matt Walst laughs as he recounts his band’s recent trip to New York City, where his band My Darkest Days ended a whirlwind tour of the world’s biggest music labels with a record deal and a shot at stardom.
The band has just finalized a deal with Mercury Records, an offshoot of Island Def Jam, home to the likes of The Killers, Kanye West and Fall Out Boy.
Walst, the 26-year-old lead singer, founded the band with fellow Norwood friends Brendan McMillan (bass) and Doug Oliver (drums) about three years ago.
Winnipeg guitarist Paulo Neta has since joined the band, which now calls Toronto home.
It was 2003 when Walst watched his older brother Brad realize his dreams as member of Three Days Grace.
The band’s debut album plucked the group from the Peterborough limelight and launched it into international success.
Walst got his feet wet on that album, co-writing two songs.
Now he and his bandmates stand on the cusp of fame themselves.
“Seeing Three Days Grace coming out of Norwood and the area, it’s a one-in-a-million chance,” Walst said. “There are so many bands. You just have to write good music and do the right things to make it.”Partnering with Canadian rock superstar Chad Kroeger has given My Darkest Days some heavyweight credit.
Walst met Nickelback’s lead singer through his brother about two years ago and was invited to the star’s Vancouver mansion.
“Going out there was … insane,” Walst said. “He has a gigantic mansion. He has a Lamborghini.”
Kroeger has helped the band develop five songs and will be producing its first album under the label, Walst said.
“Once we got working with Chad, it gave us a lot of hope and inspiration,” he said.
Walst wouldn’t say how much the band’s record deal was worth but said it was a “substantial amount.”
“It’s enough for us to live for a couple of years, enough to record a kick-ass album,” he said. “This is just the start for us, to get our name out there, have a label behind us pushing the music.”
The group plans to go back to Kroeger’s west-coast recording studio in September to finish its album.
It will follow the release with a tour, Walst said, adding he has the unique opportunity to learn from his big brother’s experience.
“He told me to just be smart about the decisions you make. When you’re playing tours be logical and keep your nose clean,” Walst said.
For someone who just a few years ago was attending Fleming College to become a customs agent, Walst is clearly enjoying the ride.
“It’s pretty crazy. Five years ago I never thought that we’d ever get the opportunity that we’ve got.”
Если по-русски, то это канадская группа, старший брат лидера играет на басу в Three Days Grace, они понравились Чаду, тот взялся продюссировать.
В сентябре ожидается конец записи на 604 Records (студии Чада) их дебютного альбома
